Decrease Plastic Use!

“Rise Above Plastics”

Sponsored by: Surfrider Foundation Take Action

There is a section of the Pacific Ocean twice the size of the continental United States called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Within it, 100 million tons of plastic swirl in a vortex of currents. There is so much plastic in the water that it outnumbers zooplankton by six to one!

This plastic ends up in the stomachs of marine birds and animals. In fact, one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die globally each year due to ingestion of or entanglement in plastics.

Plastic is forever, with virtually every piece of petroleum based plastic ever made still in existence. That’s why it’s so critical to our oceans and beaches that we dramatically reduce our use of plastics, especially single-use plastics, starting today.

You can make a difference for our world’s oceans, waves and beaches — pledge to rise above plastics today.

I commit to do my part to rise above plastics and protect the world’s oceans, waves and beaches from plastic pollution. I will do this by:

  • Using reusable bottles for my water and other drinks. By using just one reusable bottle, I will keep 167 single-use plastic bottles from entering the environment.
  • Using cloth bags for groceries and other purchases. For each reusable bag I use, I will save approximately 400 plastics from being used.
  • Recycling the plastic bags and bottles I already have. For every thirteen plastic bags I don’t use, I will save enough petroleum to drive a car one mile.”

After a 7.9 magnitude earthquake shook southwestern China,

“Save the Children plans to set up child-friendly spaces and temporary classrooms for primary schools in one of the most devastated communities in Deyang Prefecture, part of Sichuan Province.

More than 3 million children live in the earthquake zone. For them, the disaster has meant the loss of everything that gave them a sense of security: their families, their homes, schools, and their daily routines.

Save the Children say child disaster victims need to quickly return to their routines. Even though they might be living in tents, families should try to get back to some normal activities like eating dinner at the same time as before the quake, and children should return to school as quickly as possible.

Children are tough and we hope and pray that most that survived the quake will grow up to lead completely normal lives. Some will need follow-up therapy and care.”

Creating Child-Friendly Spaces

“For children whose caregivers have survived, Save the Children, working alongside the local Red Cross, is preparing plans for five temporary child-friendly spaces to create a sense of normalcy and provide a safe place for children to play, learn and socialize. These areas also will help to support parents and caregivers.

In cases where children have no caregivers, while family tracing begins, Save the Children will support the Women’s Federation of Sichuan Province, which is creating four temporary child-friendly centers in Mianyang, Deyang and Chengdu.

In Mianyang and Deyang Prefectures, Save the Children also is working with the local Education Bureau to help set up 12 temporary classrooms — providing desks, chairs, textbooks, and other school supplies — for primary school children, ages 6 to 12.

Officials report more than 51,000 dead, 288,000 injured, and 12 million displaced.”

Grow Food for Your Family and Neighbors

Provide Food Security for All
Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Catholic Relief Services

“The rising cost of grains like wheat, corn and rise has skyrocketed in less than a year. Rice, the staple food for 3 billion people, has tripled in cost in the last 18 months. If immediate needs are not met, and if resources and policies supporting increased agricultural production are not put in place soon, hunger across the globe could happen soon rather than latter.!

We must find immediate and long-term solutions so that more prices increases are averted. A first step is making sure that emergency help is provided in the U.S. 2008 Supplemental Appropriations bill and that money is also set aside for development programs to avert future food emergencies. Please take action today!

Lets get large summer organic gardens growing. Kids help prepare the soil and grow extra to share with a less fortunate neighbor or friend. You can also can some for the fall, learn what foods can be dehydrated and put those away to help cut food costs for the winter. Kids encourage your school to start a garden as well.

If you need ideas on any aspect of gardening let me know.

We’ll post some contacts on the web and in your area.

Canada’s Ancient Forest Must Be Protected

One of the world’s largest intact forest ecosystems — the breeding grounds for many of the world’s warblers, ducks and other migratory birds — is in big trouble.

Canada’s boreal forest spans more than 1.4 billion acres and provides vital breeding habitat for many of the world’s birds — including nearly 40% of North America’s ducks, geese, and swans.

Each year, more than 300 species of birds, including bufflehead ducks, boreal chickadees, Cape May warblers, sparrows and more, spend time in this special place. In fact, the boreal is so important to so many birds that it is sometimes called North America’s bird nursery and sanctuary.

Lynx, grizzlies and wolves also make their home in the boreal forest. And it is one of the world’s largest “carbon reservoirs,” trapping carbon that might otherwise contribute to global warming.
Please protect this these ancient forests– and the wildlife must survive — from the threat of destructive development, Defenders of Wildlife has joined with the Save Our Boreal Birds Campaign and conservation groups from around the world.

Will you join the fight?
Speak out for migratory birds and other wildlife. Sign the boreal forests petition today.

Please forward this message to all environmental and bird and wildlife lovers everywhere and encourage them to get involved so Defenders of Wildlife consortium can reach our 35,000 signature goal before June 1!

Please sign our petition and urge the Canadian government to protect this special place.”

Beef Protection Finally! Watch out for it in Pet Food Next.

“This morning, the USDA announced that it will implement a complete ban on slaughter for human consumption of cattle unable to stand and walk unassisted. The decision comes after The Humane Society of the United States documented horrible abuses of downed cows in a series of undercover videos.
For far too long, sick and crippled animals have been allowed into the food supply, subjecting them to needless torment and putting consumers at risk. Thanks in part to many thousands of animal advocates who emailed and called public officials about the scandalous mistreatment of these animals, the USDA is moving to close the downer loophole. We are calling on the agency to expedite the process and ban the slaughtering of downers without delay.
Once the loophole is closed, we’ll push for additional reforms.”

Buffalo- No Safe Place in Yellowstone

Both buffalo and wolves are being gunned down under false pretenses.

Various groups including Defenders of Wildlife, National Resources Defense Council and Buffalo Field Champaign and various wolf preservation groups have gone back to court to block the Bush administration from killing even more of thee endangered animals. They have killed 1435 buffalo this winter. The wolves that are in much fewer number have been slaughtered as well. The park service claims this culling of buffalo is necessary to curb the spread of a disease called brucellosis, but non has been found in the animals in this park. Write your congressmen and contact and support these group that are fighting to save the balance of animals and plants on our earth. Sure would be wonderful if we could put all of this money that goes into defense into research, education and development. Please write your congressmen and women today. Thank you. -Mother Nature

Let’s Get Rid of Soft Plastics

I know this is a tall order, but the phthalites in soft plastic have be killing or genetically altering frogs, and their friends for years. Only recently scientific research has proven that these plastics leach female hormones into the food or liquids kept in. If one uses cosmetics and deodorants or sunscreen with phthalites, literally we’re eating this plastic gas off substance.

Baby bottles and plastic juice and water bottles give these contaminants to our kids. Who needs them I say!
