Bush’s parting “energy gifts” begin oil and gas drilling

As a parting gift to the energy industry, the Bureau of Land Management announced expansion of its Utah oil and gas. utah-arch

This deadly leasing program is to include thousands of acres on or near the boundaries of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, as well as Dinosaur National Monument. The iconic landscapes of Desolation and Nine Mile Canyons are also threatened by the planned December 19, 2008 lease sale.

This news comes as an unpleasant surprise to the National Park Service, which complains that it hasn’t had sufficient time to comment. It is also of concern to one of President-elect Obama’s transition team leaders, John Podesta, who told Fox News on Sunday:
“You see the Bush administration even today moving aggressively to do things that I think are probably not in the interest of the country. They want to have oil and gas drilling in some of the most sensitive, fragile lands in Utah that they’re going to try to do right as they are walking out the door. I think that’s a mistake.”
This concern is encouraging! But the backlash from the energy industry and its supporters is already starting.

We need your help now to:
• Thank President-elect Obama for his concern about drilling in Utah, and ask him to protect Utah’s wild lands. The Bush administration’s last minute assault on Utah’s wilderness creates an urgent need for the Congress to enact America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act.
Please ask your Senators to protect Utah’s wild lands supporting America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act.
Working together we can channel our nation’s new political energy into real protection for Utah’s wild lands!
Thank you
