14 new runaway stars are born travel with arrowhead shaped tails

ws01-star-160gvs010709Resembling comets streaking across the sky, these four speedy stars are traveling through dense interstellar space gas, creating these brilliantly colored arrowhead structures called bow shocks. “We think we have found a new class of bright, high-velocity stellar interlopers,” Raghvendra Sahai of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said on January 6, 2009.

These 14 young stars can be seen racing through clouds of gas like bullets, creating brilliant arrowhead structures and tails of glowing gas, have been captured by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. They are a new type of runaway stars, scientists say.
The discovery of the speedy stars by Hubble, announced here today at the 213th meeting of the American Astronomical Society, came as something of a shock to the astronomers who found them.
