“Running cheetahs need PUFAs – do you? ”

Muscle Health

It seems that all mammal muscles need similar nutrients. In a recent study on muscle speed scientists found that polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are important to maintain strong healthy function and muscle reaction time Humans, cheetahs and other mammals cannot make PUFAs; it must come from their diet. PUFAs effect muscle response in vertebrates.

N-6 PUFAs content in muscle phospholipids effect fast muscles. The body of an animal is made up of both fast and slow muscle fibers. Cheetahs have a higher proportion of fast muscle fibers than do other cats and other land animals. So they are the fastest land animal, but cannot sustained long marathon runs. The running speed of cheetahs and 35 other mammalian species from shrews to elephants tested showed that one factor contributing to their speed was the PUFAs in the skeletal muscles.
