Allosphere the spherical research center science and art combine

The Allosphere is one of the largest scientific and artistic instruments in the world based at UCSB, the Allosphere and its 3D immersive theater maps complex data in time and space.

Since 1997, JoAnn Kuchera-Morin and her team of digital media researchers have been nurturing a multi-disciplinary field that unites science and engineering through the use of new media. New discoveries will be a collaborations effort that bring together art, science, engineering and the cognitive sciences in a unique environment that allows interactive visual and aural representation of mathematical/scientific data, in a large-scale immersive scientific laboratory. Scientific challenges today need to be resolved analytically and interpreted visuall and interpreted through the eyes of various disciplines to arrive at solutions to complex health, nano-engineering and energy issues of our time.

In this 3 story spherical lab 15 researchers will see true 3D 360-degree projection of visual and aural data. The camera tracks the interactivity of images and sound caused by the density of the tissue the microscope’s 3D imaging is projecting.

It is exciting to get a peek into the future of science, engineering, cognitive research and art.
